Mechanical Keyless Locks
Mechanical keyless locks, also called pushbutton locks, cipher locks or cypher locks, open with a code entered on mechanical buttons. They need no batteries, no wiring and no power, so there is nothing to replace or recharge and they keep working during power outages.
This category covers more than 2,000 mechanical keyless products, led by Dormakaba (Kaba Simplex and Unican), plus Lockey, Codelocks, CompX National, EASILOK and General Lock. You will find cylindrical lever and knob locks, mortise locks, deadbolts, exit device trim, narrow stile storefront locks and gate locks, plus replacement parts, strikes and accessories.
Mechanical vs. Electronic Keyless Locks
A mechanical lock typically works with a single access code, which is changed by hand when needed. Electronic keypad locks can hold many user codes, keep an audit trail and run on batteries. Choose mechanical for a low-maintenance lock on a busy door shared by a small group, such as offices, staff rooms, supply rooms, server closets and gates. Choose electronic locks when you need individual user codes or access records.
How to Choose
- Trim style: lever, knob or deadbolt.
- Door type: standard wood or hollow metal doors, or narrow stile aluminum glass doors (see storefront locks).
- Key override: many models offer a key override or interchangeable core option.
- Finish: common finishes include satin chrome (26D) and dark bronze.
- Indoor or outdoor: check the product specifications for weather-rated models.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do mechanical keyless locks need batteries?
No. Mechanical pushbutton locks are fully mechanical and need no batteries, wiring or power.
What is the difference between a cipher lock and a pushbutton lock?
They are the same thing. Cipher lock, cypher lock and pushbutton lock are common names for mechanical locks that open with a button code.
How many codes can a mechanical lock hold?
Most mechanical keyless locks use one access code at a time. If you need a separate code for each user, look at our electronic keypad locks.
Can a mechanical keyless lock replace my existing lock?
Many models fit standard door preparations, but some need minor modification. Check the backset, door thickness and door prep in each product's specifications, or call us at (561) 826-6018 for help.
